An Open Source Education

This is a repost of an article we published today on the toggle blog. Its our experiences of running this project over the last few years:

On 1st May 2008 we launched Pixie, our open source content management system. Or as we like to say: "small, simple, website maker". Two years on its time to share our experience of running a free to own open source project.

A little update for a little CMS

I thought it would be a good idea to post an update on where we are with the Pixie auction. Our first listing on Flippa ended without a winner. Rather than give up I have re-listed Pixie one more time to see what the outcome is. The second auction is due to end within the next week.

I also received an invite today for a service called Flattr. Flattr is one of the first services I have seen that addresses micro-payments sensibly. I am extremely interested to see what the implications of such a service are for the open source world. I am going to be testing Flattr right here. If your on board all you have to do is press this button:

I would also be very grateful if anyone had any suggestions for the future of Pixie. I am not overly hopeful that the auction will end successfully. If this is the case then I will be looking for new energy and ideas for the project. If you have any please post them in the comments. I am looking for project management ideas and volunteers rather than feature suggestions.

And finally we are still looking for feedback on the 1.05 beta. You can download and give us feedback on this version of Pixie in the forums.

Apparently there is a website where you can send small messages to each other (140 charachters at a time) and apparently that website has become very popular. Not be to left out in the cold we felt it was time that Pixie joined in on the activity know as "tweeting" and made some friends of his own. In short: you can now follow Pixie on twitter.

We will be logging in occasionally to field any quick support questions and post links to relevant Pixie news.

Pixie takes runner up spot as "Most Promising Open Source CMS"

Yeasterday Packt Publishing announced the winners of the 2009 Most Promising Open Source CMS competition and Pixie came runner up! This is a massive achievement for such a small CMS and I would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote for us. We came joint second with Pligg, while Impress CMS took the top spot. From Packt Publishing:

We are pleased to announce that ImpressCMS has won the Most Promising Open Source CMS Category in the 2009 Open Source CMS Award. While ImpressCMS took first place in this category, Pixie and Pligg weren’t far behind and settled for a tie in the first runner up spot.

ImpressCMS has featured in the top three in this category for the second time in a row, and has lived up to its reputation this year by winning the top spot.

Pixie and Pligg, on the other hand, featured in this category for the first time and managed to impress a lot of judges with their quality and support.

Here's the distribution of the prize fund for this category:

  • ImpressCMS: $2,000
  • Pixie: $1,000
  • Pligg: $1,000

More news to follow (once we have heard from Packt). Thanks again!
